Tom Russell Band-Cruise Cafe May 19th 1990

The first time I ran into the Tom Russell Band was at Nightstage in Cambridge where they opened for Steve Earl or was it Joe Ely... damn my memory is fading! it's a good thing weeklyleaks is around to catch what's left of my grey cassette...Anyhow, I wound up working with the band on numerous occasions at Cruise Cafe and they always drew a full house. They probably played for more people at Cruise than any other band, but then again I might be wrong..anyone?
Tom Russell has had an amazing career and has continued releasing brilliant albums, his songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Nancy Griffith, Dave Alvin and The Contenders. ...speaking of, he mentions The Contenders on this tape as being one of his favorite country rock bands alongside The Kinks. The bass player from The Contenders Odd Eirik Fleischer is a good friend of mine and played on all 10 of the Home Groan albums we released. The Contenders' lead singer Bjørn Kulseth. is also mentioned by name on the tape and is now running the small record label, Norskamerikaner and released our HGH album All The Men In Dresses. And speaking of bass players, Tom Russells' great bass player Bill Troiani wound up staying in Oslo and recently won a Norwegian grammy for best blues album!
Tom Russell has also become a favorite of David Letterman and has played on the show a bunch of times. I could go on and on,... but do check out Fats Kaplin and Andrew Hardin as well, and be sure to catch Tom Russell live, he's got a Norwegian tour coming up in May!

Tom Russell: guitar, vocals
Fats Kaplin: fiddle, pedal steel, accordian, harmonica, vocals
Andrew Hardin: guitar vocals
Billy Troiani: bass guitar, vocals

Levon Helm @Nightstage 17th June 1988 w/Max Weinberg

Levon Helm played Nightstage in Cambridge,MA with a great band including E-Street band drummer Max Weinberg. I don't remember too much from this gig, crazy I'm sure and this tape sounds like it must be from the last show, I do seem to remember one of the drummers slipped off his stool that evening...
I need help from the enlightened as to who was in the band, maybe my friends over at The Band site can help out?
Levon passed away this week, a unique musician and a huge inspiration.Peace.

Asleep At The Wheel Cruise Cafe, Oslo-N, March. ?. 1992

Asleep at the Wheel came to Cruise for a two night stint in March 1992, I don't remember the dates (anyone?) and put on two great shows. Texas swing at its best and the small stage got a beating it probably never recovered from, not that I know what that means.. Anyhow they drew a mixed crowd of music lovers, jazz buffs, country shit kickers etc. and from the sound of this old cassette the Cruise was rockin!
I'm not sure who was in the band at the time but I'll make an unedumacated guess, the band leader Ray Benson does mention David Sanger and I know for a fact the now very famous Cindy Cashdollar on pedal steel was still part of the band. I had previously done sound for Cashdollar in Boston when she played a duo gig with Leon Redbone. Cindy is also a friend of my songwriting buddy Jeff Wasserman and the bass player in my new band Jørun Bøgberg , and she plays on albums by the both of them. Cindy is now a regular fixture on stage with the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Ryan Adams, who ever those guys are. Anyhow I'm short on info, who played bass, fiddle, saxophone etc??

Ray Benson Guitar lead vocals
Floyd Domino piano ?
David Sanger drums
Cindy Cashdollar steel guitar
Ricky Turpin Fiddle/vocals ?
Michael Francis saxophone ?
David Earl Miller bass?

help me out folks!

Riders In The Sky Nightstage May 10th 1988

Riders In The Sky are about the funniest guys I've ever heard on stage and they have been an inspiration for some of my own work in HGH (Hagfors Gebhardt Hello!). They are great musicians and combined with quick wit are an act you definitely need to check out! Look here for their tour schedule.
I probably got the chance to work with them at least a couple of nights in Cambridge and as you can hear from this tape they had a great following. The late great John Hartford was on the bill with them and he joined them for a song or two at the end of the evening. I'll get back to John's performance later... The Riders were a trio back in 1988 but have since expanded to a quartet adding the accordian or "stomach Steinway". They have also penned a bunch of songs that have been used in animated movies like Toy Story etc read up on them here while enjoying this tape.

Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys Nightstage 6.30.1988

Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys! I got a chance to meet and work with this legend back in 1988. To quote wikipidea ...William Smith Monroe (September 13, 1911 – September 9, 1996) was an American musician who created the style of music known as bluegrass, which takes its name from his band, the "Blue Grass Boys," named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky. Monroe's performing career spanned 60 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader. He is often referred to as The Father of Bluegrass.
I really enjoyed the two shows I did with him and his band, I'm a big fan of old timey music and they dug deep into the well and picked out some classics. The band had a great sense of humor and the crowd ate them up, yelling out requests and having some being played. Enjoy!

John Lee Hooker New Years Eve 1987/ Nightstage w/Peter Wolf

John Lee Hooker, David Maxwell and The Pleasure Kings with special guest Peter Wolf rocked the boat at Nightstage New Years eve 1987!
I had another band Down Time on my stage plot so I guess they must have opened. Anyhow. It was a special night for me, I've been the proud owner of John Lee Hooker albums ever sine I was a teenager, so I was indeed starstruck... David Maxwell a Boston based piano player put a band together for the evening, the rhythm section was Duke Robillards old band The Pleasure Kings. Hooker & Wolf at Nightstage

John Lee brought Peter Wolf of Boston's own J Geils Band fame up for a number, Peter Wolf has released some great solo albums in recent years by the way. Check them out. Also almost in the same breath I have to mention I saw J.Geils open up for The Rolling Stones in 1982 in Gothenburg Sweden, they blew the Stones away that night...and speaking of... I saw John Lee Hooker open for Van Morrison in Santa Cruz CA. in 1981 and Van watched his whole show standing on stage left...
I don't have the names of the sax player or the other guitar player (he's very low in the mix, musta had a loud amp...)anyone?

John Lee Hooker mentioned he'd broken his leg a few weeks earlier falling off stage in Florida, but I can't remember him wearing a cast.

Les Paul Trio Nightstage Cambridge. MA. 10.16.87

www.lespaulonline.com/

This tape is a gem, Les Paul was a legendary guitar player, songwriter, inventor and a fantastic entertainer. Les Paul as most people know is the man behind the Gibson guitar by the same name but he also won Grammy's as a musician and was the brain behind sound on sound, the dubbing recording technique we now all take for granted and that later evolved into multitracking.
I was lucky enough to work with Les Paul several times at Nightstage, the man was hilarious! He'd drive up from the NYC area in his old Lincoln Continental with his caseless prototype Les Paul guitar lying in the back seat and he'd get to the club early which was a riot because he was full of stories and he loved to talk, Les was a great guy to be around.
His band would come separately and I can't remember their names. Anyone? Les once scolded me for not micing his amp (the clubs Fender Twin Reverb) dead center on the speaker cone. I was not about to question the man and have on the most part adhered to his conviction ever since. Beside micing his amp he also wanted me to tap his signal through a home made DI box. And he was quiet! Sitting in my pearch up on the balcony I could hear the acoustic sound of his strings above the amp.
Listen to this whole concert his remarks are as good as his playing. " If you want speed take a pill..." This tape is a history lesson. Enjoy.

Mose Allison Nightstage 9.18.87

"The man’s voice was heaven. So cool, so decisively hip... Mose was my man. I felt him to be the epitome of restrained screaming power."
Pete Townshend

Ahhh Mose!
Mose Allison is more than a legend he's a totally original musician, songwriter and performer still going strong at the ripe young age of 84.
His songs have been covered by Van Morrison, John Mayall, The Who, The Clash, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt, but his own rendition's outshine them all. I caught one of his shows a couple of years ago at the Iridium Jazz Club on Broadway in NYC with my sweet Kari Slaatsveen, Mose played solo and was great both lyrical and nimble.
On this show from Nightstage he performed with a trio. I remember Mose being very friendly and also very concerned about his sound. I miked the Kawai Baby Grand with a couple of my own mics that I still own Shure Sm 81's and Mose asked me to back them away from the sound board to achieve a fuller sound, so I did, it did add more cymbals and bass in the piano mics but who am I to argue? He's the man.

Enjoy this great show and catch him while he's hot on a stage near you!

Anson Funderburgh and The Rockets featuring Sam Myers is one of my most requested artists on weeklyleaks. I worked with Anson on several occasions on both sides of the Atlantic and it was always a pleasure. Anson is a gentleman, he is a tasteful, melodic and needle sharp guitar player. The late Sam Myers is the featured vocalist and harmonica player in The Rockets and was for the bulk of Ansons's early career. As you can hear from the enthusiastic crowd Anson & co had a very dedicated following in Oslo, they were also a very disciplined band and the stage levels were moderate giving me the opportunity to bring out the full band in the mix, so this tape sounds pretty good. Oh yeah, I can also hear a really sweet sounding Yamaha CP 70 piano in the mix...

The Soul Queen of New Orleans!

Irma Thomas and The Professionals
What a night! The crowd went wild for Irma from the time she started singing back stage with a wireless mic to her leaving them screaming for more... and she paid them back ten fold. I had a blast listening to this tape, oh, by the way this is one of those weird tapes where I had a mic (Shure sm 57) sitting on the balcony going into one channel and the other channel is the board mix, so this sounds best in stereo or else it gets too boomy...Anyhow Irma spent two nights at Nightstage doing two shows a night with her eminent eight piece backing band The Professionals. Irma Thomas had just released her album The Way I Feel on Cambridge's own Rounder Records.
Delbert McClinton Cruise Cafe Nov. 13th 1989

Folks, it's celebration time!
This week is the 25th anniversary of the opening of the now long defunct Cruise Cafe in Oslo Norway. Cruise had a 10 year ++ run at booking some of the hottest bands in Oslo and making the best burgers. The owner and main booking honcho, Svein Eriksen was a huge fan of Delbert McClinton, so this leak is for you Svein.
Listening back through this tape, I'm amazed at how good it was! What I remember from the gig, from a house soundmans point of view was not quite so rozy. The band brought in a large venue production to a small club, we had to make the stage bigger, bring in an additional monitor mixer that I wound up running, sitting cramped in front of the subwoofers, yeah, it sounded like hell from where I was sitting, but I managed to tweak this mix off the monitor board and it's not bad!
Anyhow Delbert is still rocking, he's won three grammy's and is an act to catch if you happen upon a town the man is in. Do it!

Etta James 8.14/15 1987 Nightstage, Cambridge, Etta calls Martin " a bright eyed bushy tailed cat"

Etta played four shows at Nightstage and it's with fond memories I listened through these tapes. Etta James is one of the most powerful performers I have ever seen. She could belt out a song like nobody else. Even though you can't hear it on these tapes, Etta was literally rolling down on the stage floor on a couple of numbers, no small feat as this was in the petite plus stage of her life. Etta was gracious, witty and smart, she also gets a kick out of teasing the audience. As far as I remember, her band was a LA based group of musicians and as was the hip ticket of the day, added their DX-7 sounds, direct electric strat, bass slapping and all the other spices that the local Berklee College of Music students used to dig.
Etta cancelled a previous gig at Nightstage and mentions it in her ramblings to the club owners Richard Lizotte and Sam ? who owned the club along with Chloe Sachs.
I can't remember the circumstances...

I also got a kick out of reliving her kind words to me, complementing me for the sound and calling me a bright eyed bushy tailed cat...

I'm a fan, no doubt about it, this guy is a true performer and an inspiration. He writes great songs and thrives on stage, besides that he he has a wonderful name, third time around.
I've done sound for Loudon a few times and have always stood behind the mixer grinning and lapping it up. I believe he hung out with the Norwegian artist Lars Lillo before the gig, they both write quirky lyrics. He struggles with a jet lagged guitar and jokes through a totally enjoyable evening down in this weird shopping center club on the waterfront.
Give him a listen and then buy his music!

Dizzy Gillespie-Nightstage Oct. 23rd 1987

My old friend and co-worker from Nightstage Laura Tennyson jumped out of cyberspace and down onto weeklyleaks with a really nice comment on this page where she mentions Dizzy Gillespie, so I decided to dust off Dizzy's cassette for Easter.
Now as I mention in my "about weeklyleaks ramblings, recording was not a priority, live sound was, well, this time around all I found was a UR46 cassette(46 min total!) now, try'n get a long concert on that...
Anyhow these shows (he played two nights) were billed as his 70th birthday, well, reading up on Dizzy proved this to be streching the truth, his birthday was the day before on October 21, but yes he did turn 70 and what I remember best from these shows was actually a mid afternoon press conference which I really wish I had recorded because Dizzy was smart and funny, he had a unique approach to verbal art as well. I also remember Nightstage supplied him with a cake, with a copy of his signature trumpet on top.
I don't know who was in his band at the time, feel free to enlighten me.

Turn the sound up for the start ( the slider to the left ), he quietly gives an introduction where he mentions his Bahai beliefs...

Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Ronnie Earl & co. Nightstage 1.27.1988

A crazy night at Nightstage featuring the recently deceased Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Ronnie Earl, Jerry Portnoy, Luther Guitar Jr Little Mike and band.
Ronnie Earl and Little Mike do their best trying to contain the beast consisting of huge loveable personalities and out of tune guitars. I don't know how many people were on stage, I can hear some amps in the background that didn't go through the PA, loose but entertaining!
Hubert is still around gigging, I guess everyone is except Pinetop who just called it quits at the ripe old age og 97, being the oldest performing bluesman.
You should follow the links on these guys, read up on them, I'll get back with some more tapes of Ronnie Earl and Jerry Portnoy, I have have some really sharp shows with these guys showing off their great talents. This tape doesn't really do them justice, but hang in for some great vocal performances and highly original guitar work by Hubert. I had to cut a couple of the songs with Pinetop, the band just didn't follow him well enough to justify it. You had to be there...Which reminds me, I found a link on youtube of Luther Guitar Jr playing at Nightstage, it gives you an idea of the venue..., check it out

You had to be there...Which reminds me, I found a link on youtube of Luther Guitar Jr playing at Nightstage, it gives you an idea of the venue..., check it out
Here's another show from Cruise Cafe in Oslo. American Music Club was a very hot band with frontman Mark Eitzel causing quite a stir. Rolling Stone named him songwriter of the year back in 1991.
This was from their first tour of Norway and the night seemed kind of quiet, well not that quiet, the regular crowd often prone to being pretty talkative seemed to be an aquired taste for the band. They actually seemed pretty surprised by the enthusiasm near the end of the set demanding a couple of encores.

Michelle Shocked Nightstage, Cambridge, Ma. May 14th 1988

Sorry! Michelle doesn't want this music made public so I took it down. Check her out anyhow.

As far as I remember Michelle Shocked walked into Nightstage barefooted and had hitchiked her way to Cambridge with her guitar, due to play the opening set before Rick Danko and his band.
She had quite a buzz going at the time, having gained instant fame with her first release called The Texas Campfire Tapes, an album recorded on the little brother of the tape machine these weeklyleaks were recorded on, The Sony Professional Walkman.
Michelle Shocked turned out to be an excellent story teller, musician and activist entertainer and really hit the sweet spot with the Cambridge folk crowd. Mr Bones came up and played his bones near the end of the first set, he was a regular at the Nightstage, played with all sorts of people, his real name was John Burrill and died in 1993. Michelle has released a pile of great albums and is frequently on the road, try and catch her if you can.

Stan Getz Nightstage April 4th 1988

Stan Getz offered me a job as his live soundman after doing this gig with him. I was flattered but turned him down, I always wondered where I'd have been if I took him up on his offer. Unfortunately Getz would only tour for another year or so after this gig before finally giving in to liver cancer in June 1991. Had I had the opportunity I would have loved to have worked with him as he was such an excellent musician, being one of the all time best tenor saxophone players.
Stan Getz was famous for his bossa nova hit The Girl From Ipanema but his career was long and varried playing with Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Chorea among others.
I was at a party at my friend/producer/arranger Lars Horntveth's house the other day and there I wound up talking to one of Norway's finest musician; Håkon Kornstad. Kornstad told me that Stan Getz was the reason he picked up the saxophone in the first place...

This tape is from the second show, I'll publish the first show at a later date.

James Blood Ulmer Nightstage 9.9.1987

James Blood Ulmer has one of the most distinct voices of any performer I have heard, be it his guitar playing or his singing voice.
Besides a blistering solo career James Blood is famous for his collaboration with Ornette Coleman.
I got a chance to work with James Blood on two occasions and he was an absolutely fascinating performer.
James Blood Ulmer always drew an interesting crowd, music lovers for sure, pushing him along with swaying bodies, bobbing heads and gigantic grins.
I'm a fan myself, a couple of my favorite albums are his Tales Of Captain Black and his 1984 release Odyssey.
This board recording is from the second show which was fairly loose and from what I can hear from the mix, his guitar must have been loud on stage.
I got the old Delta Lab Effectron adding some slap, I don't know why the high hat is so loud, maybe the drummer had a vocal mic that I left on..
Anyhow, the vibe is cool.
Enjoy

Lonnie Mack Cruise-Oslo- 5.5.1991

Here's a concert with the legendary Lonnie Mack, Lonnie had a huge influence on early guitar players due to his speed and aggresive use of the whammy bar. He spent most of his years squeezing his music out of a Gibson Flying V guitar. He played Cruise a couple of times and had a very distinct tone, his amp of choice (as was Roy Buchanan's) was a Roland JC 120 stereo chorus. I miked up both speakers for the full effect on this off the board recording. Lonnie had a great band and drew a good crowd having fans both in the rockabilly, rock, country and blues scenes.
Reading up on Lonnie Mack I read that he played bass on The Doors Morrison Hotel, and when asked by a journalist about Jim Morrison he answered; He was definitely out there, what can I say, I don't think he was a genius or anything, I think he was just ripped out of his tree... Lonnie was credited for playing bass on Roadhouse Blues but rumours have it he played the guitar solo as well.
